Electronic Crafts / doing-it-ourselves.

01. Proposition
Investigate possible impact of democratization of innovation on the fields of product design and communication, focusing more specifically on electronics and physical computing technologies.
What kind of new approaches, products and models could emerge from a wide-spread movement of more and more people doing-it-themselves?
What would be the consequence to the world of design and interactive creation?

I am also interested in exploring and refining a methodology of electronic crafts based on practices similar to what is done at ITP and spreading trough already emerging open source hardware information networks.
What can a craftsmenship approach bring to the future of new technologies?

Option A — impact of democratization of innovation

Investigate the impact of the current democratization of innovation that is occuring through the growing interest and shared knowledge of how to make almost anything.

As the global economy heavily relies on the conceptualisation, creation, production, distribution and marketing of goods and objects from large companies and organisation all over the world, what happens when more and more individuall are just doing-it-themselves. They have an idea, a need, they build something to answer it, no distribution required and no marketing needed. [–if anything some marketing is done online through alternative medias and distribution is usually local only].

Is this the signs of possible new economic models based around ideas of local/global, sustainability and/or personalisation? How can this be applied towards a new model that challenges established norms of consumerism? How can this answer some social/economic issues in developping countries?

Option B — High Maintenance Objects

How can we design objects that reflect or answer more to our inner feelings, our “illegitimate needs”, our “unofficial narratives”? Can we use and create technologies that talk to our personalities and individual emotions without being obtrusive or inappropriately smart (like Microsoft word trying to fill in blanks for me….)?

Attempt to redesign objects of our everyday lives with enough personality that they answer or cater or at least acknowledge how we live and exist as humans?
Not life awareness objects, but life aware.
Not intelligent, but absurd.
Not complex systems, but simple and adoptable and easy.

Life awarness electronics

What technological design is lacking is a connection with life, it lacks in it’s refelection and expression of truly human emotions and expressions: we need to communicate and trade and progress and research but we also live with fears and pleasures, dreams and fantasies, obsessions and sorrows – and in this technology has mostly failed us, in giving back to us answers to our true humanity.
